World's Finest Fools

What's more fun than one magical extradimensional imp?

Why, two of course!

So, in honor of April Fool's Day, two of the earliest team-ups of Batman and Superman's two foolish foes, Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk!

Bat-Mite Meets Mr. Mxyzptlk

The two imps first meet in World's Finest Comics #113 (November, 1960) in a story by Jerry Coleman, Dick Sprang and Sheldon Moldoff (under a cover by Curt Swan and Stan Kaye), where it was an ordinary day in Gotham, with Batman and Robin about to take down a criminal robot...or at least planning on it.  But the robot seemed too much, so Superman was going to pitch in...until Bat-Mite stopped the help because he wanted his hero to do the job.  The dynamic duo went to continue the battle, but Superman was distracted by mystical menaces....but Bat-Mite said it wasn't him stopping Superman.

It was Superman's 5th Dimensional foe, Mr. Mxyzptlk!  Mr. Mxyzptlk was not happy that Bat-Mite was vexing Superman.  The two imps battled for a while, but, after a time, Mxy got tired of it, and went home to the 5th Dimension, and Bat-Mite tired of the activity as well, and also went home (much to the relief of the heroes).

The Incredible Team of Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk

For their second go around in World's Finest Comics #123 (February, 1962) under a cover by Dick Dillin and Sheldon Moldoff, and story by Jerry Coleman, Dick Sprang and Sheldon Moldoff, Batman and Robin were taking down a criminal gang that used a rocket to commit crimes (with Bat-Mite watching his hero in action).  The criminals were giving the dynamic duo a hard time, so Superman joined in (with Mr. Mxyzptlk appearing at the same time).

Superman was taking out the rocked with a boulder (because of Kryptonite on the rocket), but Bat-Mite changed the boulder into a creature....then, Mr. Mxyzptlk changed it again....then, the creature took on a life of its own due to the combined magic, and became a big menace!  The two couldn't defeat it, even working together...as the creature would just change into an even bigger problem.  Superman's powers didn't work well against the magic creature, but Batman helped with a solution, making an opposite of magnetic creature it had become, and the two cancelled each other out.  The two imps went back home to not be insulted by the heroes.

The two would meet again, and find more history on that with Bat-Mite's history, or a little on Mr. Mxyzptlk himself.

Superman And Two Foolish Imps

April 1st is considered the birthday of Superman's 5th dimensional foe, Mr. Mxyzptlk...

...but the little man from Zrfff wasn't always what he was today, and started off slightly differently, as Mr. Mxyztplk, as he faced the original, Golden Age Superman.

Mr. Mxyztplk

The original Mr. Mxyztplk first appeared in Superman #30 (September-October, 1944) by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster and Ira Yarbrough.  He was a nuisance to Superman, using his extra dimensional powers to vex the man of steel over the years, including issues of Action Comics (#80, #102, #112, #151, #190 and #208), Superman (#33, #36, #40, #46, #51, #59, #62, #82, #86, #96, #103 and #105) and in Superman Family #208, facing Mr. and Mrs. Superman, with that last appearance establishing that the"tp" version of the imp in the purple suit (at least in his earliest appearances) was the one to face the Earth-2 Superman.

Mr. Mxyzptlk

The imp that was to bother the Earth-1 Superman was Mr. Mxyzptlk, and his first appearance was in Superman #131 (August, 1959) by Jerry Coleman and Al Plastino.  This imp had a long, magical career, menacing not only Superman, but his pal Jimmy Olsen, his girlfriend Lois Lane, his cousin Supergirl, his duplicate Bizarro, had a younger version fight the younger Superboy in retroactive tales and even teaming up with Bat-Mite to face Superman and Batman, and even other Superman team-ups as well, before the Crisis on Infinite Earths called an end to his career.

These all happened over the issues of Superboy #78 (in his first meeting with Superboy), #83, #95, #114, and #120, Superman #135, #145, #148, #150, #154, #162, #169, #171, #174, #218, #283, #290, #299, #335, #349, #351, #407 and #421, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #44, #52, #53, #54, #65, #66, #71, #74 and #114. World's Finest Comics #113, #123, #152 and #169, Action Comics #273, #282, #283, #291, #368, #460, #467, #563, #574 and #583, Adventure Comics #288, #306, #351, #386, and #393, Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane #29, #48, #61, #62 and #73 and DC Comics Presents #33, #34, #53 and #97.

Just so there's no fooling here, the difference (more of less) of the Earth-1 and Earth-2 Supermans are explained here, and saying his name backwards (Kltpzyxm or Klptzyxm, depending on which imp you prefer) will send you home and to other adventures elsewhere (and we'll figure out the rest of his history in 90 days or later...)!

Secret Origins Of Super Villains 2

Coming back with a little more Secret Origins for DC's super-villains.

Here's even more from Limited Collectors' Edition C-45 of June-July, 1976, under another wonderfully evil cover by Dick Giordano.

This time around, its the foes of Batman, Flash, Superboy/Superman and Wonder Woman that get covered....specifically Catwoman, Mirror Master, Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Cheetah!

Catwoman

Readers get to see "The Secret Life Of The Catwoman" from Batman #62 (December-January, 1950/1951) by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Lew Schwartz and Charles Paris.

Catwoman is broken out of jail by the mysterious Mr. X to help in his planned crime spree.  Along the way, Catwoman encounters Batman, but saves him from a collapsing wall, with her receiving a knock on the head.  Catwoman claims the 1950 calendar is ahead of time...and wonders why she is in costume, after all she is just stewardess Selina Kyle.  Batman deduces she had amnesia, and works with her as she recalls a planned meeting with Mr. X.  Catwoman works with the dynamic duo to capture Mr. X, and after doing so, Catwoman vows to retire from the costumed life.

Thankfully she did not....

Mirror Master

Reflecting on his past, its time for the origin of the Mirror Master from Flash #105 (February-March, 1959) by John Broome, Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella with "The Master Of Mirrors!".

Ex-con Sam Scudder goes into a bank, to capture an image of one of the tellers.  Appears while serving time, Scudder made a mistake making a mirror, learning how to keep a reflection in one.  He continued experimenting with mirrors, making images that he could command, making himself a Mirror Master.  Scudder used this ability to rob banks in Central City, coming into conflict with the Flash, who followed one of his images home, and, after a battle with some of Mirror Master's illusions, the Flash took Mirror Master to jail (so Barry Allen could make his lunch date with Iris West).

Mirror Master would return again and again to face the Flash.

Mr. Mxyzptlk
Next up, a foe of Superman's, the 5th Dimensional imp, Mr. Mxyzptlk, but a tale from his (and the Man of Steel's) boyhood, with a young Mxyzptlk facing Superboy for the first time in Superboy #78 (January, 1960) in "The Ghost of Jor-El!" by Jerry Siegel and George Papp.

Mxyzptlk started as a mischievous little boy that vexed his 5th Dimensional parents of Fuzastl and Tlndsa, so, he ran away to Earth-1, encountering Superboy in Smallville, thinking it would be fun to turn the town against the Boy of Steel.  The boy prankster even enrolls in Smallville High, meeting Clark Kent, and accidentally revealing to Clark his color blindness.  After a few attempts to sabotage Superboy (which Clark turns to his advantage), Superboy finally uses what he has learned to get the imp to say his name backwards and go home.

Mr. Mxyzptlk never forgave Superboy for this, and would return again and again to torment the Man of Steel.

Cheetah

Last, but not least of the featured origins, was the first battle of "Wonder Woman And The Cheetah" from Wonder Woman #6 (Fall, 1943) by William Moulton Marston and H. G. Peter.

Debutante Priscilla Rich is outshone by Wonder Woman a few times, and decides to plot revenge against the amazing amazon.  Priscilla manifests an alter ego, the Cheetah, and garbs herself to look like one. stealing charity money with the intent to frame Wonder Woman for its theft.  Cheetah fails in this, ending up trying to kill Wonder Woman in quicksand, then a fire, with Wonder Woman nearly figuring out her identity as it appears the flames take the Cheetah.

But, the Cheetah would return.

Added features in the treasury include a feature on 18 super villains (including Captain Boomerang, Vandal Savage, Scarecrow, Matter Master, the Shark, Bizarro No. 1, Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Giganta, Grodd, Brainiac, Two-Face, Felix Faust, Queen Bee, the Top, Pied Piper, Sonar and Kanjar Ro), another feature on the many costumes of the Catwoman, and, on the last page, "Every Hero's Enemy"...that of Dr. Light, making this and the other DC villains' treasury an indispensable guide for every villain fan of from the 1970s!

Mattel’s 30th Anniversary Super Powers DC Classics

Mattel had said they were ending the DC Universe Classics, but they have one last blast from the past for us all!

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Kenner’s Super Powers collection…we have six figures in classic Super Powers packaging (though these figures will be in the DC Classics six inch size!).

Coming in September, 2014, will be Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman, in the brighter colors of the Super Powers set!

Coming in October, 2014, will be Gold Superman and Mr. Mxyzptlk (reflecting some of the unproduced figures of the Super Powers line, as a Gold Superman was to be done for Superman’s 50th Anniversary, and the imp was also a figure produced for the Mego line back in the 1970s and to be a part of the 4th wave of Kenner’s Super Powers) and Green Lantern as Riddler (as Riddler was an exclusive to the 1989 Super Amigos made only in Argentina…and was a Green Lantern figure painted to be the Riddler).  Holy confused identity, Batman!

Not only that, but each figure will have a piece to collect and connect, and will build a Super Powers accurate Kalibak!

One line ends, and one gets a new beginning…

Superman Retro Action Figures Series 1

Look...up in the sky!

It's not a bird, nor a plane...it's a line of Superman Action Figures from Figures Toy Company!

Superman Retro Figures Series 1

Superman and Supergirl are exact replicas of the original action figures that were released by Mego.

Mr. Mxyzptlk is also a replica, but is on the 6 inch teen body...so he's lost some weight!

Bizarro No. 1 is a Figures Toy Company original, all for the Superman Retro 8 Inch Action Figures.

The estimated release date for these is late November, 2014...but, as always, subject to change!

More exciting is what is to come in series 2...Superboy!  Lois Lane!  Clark Kent!  Jimmy Olsen!

Great Krypton and Great Caesar's Ghost!
